as a diversionary tactic to mislead the Germans for which it was awarded a Presidential citation

This type of phenomenon was known as a "Brotchen" after the German bread roll served for breakfast

though part of the scabbard patent number is obscured by dirt and rust staining:

F. & C.) of New Britain, CT., who also made the 1917 and Mark 1 pattern "Trench" knuckle knives. This example is marked on the ricasso with: U. S. (Eagle) NO12 and on the reverse with: L. F. & C.
