When the top dimple is pressed, the upper part of the light pivots away from the surface and swivels from side to side, to obtain the desired reading position. The bottom dimple closes the light enabling it to sit discreetly flush. The light shines out of the bottom of the fitting offering a focussed illumination source with little light
